I'm able to produce 5.56 and 7.72 and 9mm and Grenades but no shell for the Shotgun...
There wasn't anything the UFO Guide about this... Is there some kind of reasearch tree? I didn't see one in the Guide.

From what you've written i know you've research a number of weapon blue prints and to produce the shoutgun cartridges you need to research shotgun blueprints.

why do you need to produce them? just harvest them off of dead morelmen.

Because if your equiping your squadmembers with shotguns for any length of time you run out of the ammo morsels you salvage ffrom morelmen on the battlefield. and even if you don't its nice to be able to produce your own weapons and ammo so you don't have to rely on battlefied salvages.

what i don't understand is why i'm able to produce [from the Ordi factory] shells for the m4 and the sniper rifle and yet my boys in the frocks can't figure out shotgun shells...
what i mean by that is this:
why is it that i am able to produce ammunition for the m4
when i haven't researched assault rifles
and yet "nada" on shotgull shells..
just wanting to make sure I didn't miss a morsel on the research tree that will come back to haunt me...

Because basic ammo only requires "Basic human weapons" tech, and shotgun shells are not considered 'basic' ammo.
Altar (the game's designer) isn't very familiar with real-world weapons technology and the history of weaponry. Shotgun shells are actually easier to make than rifle cartridges, since they requires less precise machining tolerances or propellant loads.

Medium armor requires advanced human weapons to have been researched. You could have found this by SEARCHING the forums for "medium armor" and finding all the relevant posts, like this one:
http://forum.ufo-aftermath.com/index.php?a...indpost&p=32311Please learn how to search. It will save you (and others) much time.

actually, it only requires a built advanced weapons lab, not advanced weapons research

Okay, you're right. But my real point was: USE THE FORUM SEARCH, DAMMIT.

Sorry S.W....
but I have researched Advanced Human Weapons... on the required tech list, the needed tech is checked... and even one of the techs that speeds up the process is checked too...
I'll try the search next time... sorry

In my first game I had the exact same issue with Machine Guns, in that I couldn't produce them, research advanced ammunition or research Drone balistic weapons.

if you had read my reply a bit above this one you would have known this

ShadowKeeper,
it was from reading your reply a bit higher above your last reply that i *did* learn this. I agree that I wasn't very clear, since I typed "i figured it out" but what I meant was, the friggin' game is very unclear, the Guide wasn't helpful, and finally after a few separate postings it got through my thick skull that i have to build an advanced weapons factory in order to build medium armor.

As a general rule, if you can research or build something that you haven't already, then you should. So if you had the ability to build the advanced weapons factory, but hadn't yet, it should have been a clue that once you had done so you might be able to do things you weren't able to do before. Sure, it's handy to know in advance, but it's not necessary. You'll need to build all these different types of structures sooner or later. So it's best to do so as soon as you can. Do that, and you won't need to worry about what's required to build what.
Also, as a general rule, if you're concerned about what research or construction to prioritize over another, prioritize weapons over armor, longer-range guns over shorter, psionics over cyborg (for the auras), and ignore defensive buildings and medical (until you encounter a certain type of alien).

I have to agreed malnipulate the bugs in the game to your advantage... Unless of course your playing what i think has been referred to as the "iron man"game.
